Life's a Beach

I want to say thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Hodgson for opening their beach-side home to my wife and I during our recent trip to New Zealand. We had an unforgettable time.

Small Moments Waiting to Happen

By now I have had the opportunity to photograph families at many different stages, and it is always exciting to see the differences and the changes.

Tung Lung Island

Somewhere in the huge network of islands around Hong Kong is Tung Lung Island. It me a train, a taxi, a ferry, and small hike to the island to meet Dawn and Darren for their wedding; and it was well worth the trip - it was a beautiful wedding on a perfect day, and a great combination of work and adventure. One of the things I love about the great city of Hong Kong is these hidden places, the beautiful moments that exist there.

There are many things I love about photographing weddings, but two of main things are these:

1 - every couple is different

2 - every location is different

The people involved definitely create the personality of the wedding, whereas the location flavours that personality by providing a unique setting for their relationship to express itself. For this reason, I am pretty sure that I will never get tired of photographing weddings. Even if I were to shoot at the same location a dozen times, it will always be different and equally inspiring (even if I were to photograph the same people at the same place it will always be unique because people are like rivers, they are never the same twice).

Ryk and Erin had a great little ceremony at the Hullet House in Hong Kong. Although they would have looked great anywhere, the venue offered a memorable backdrop for their love.

Hollywood Hair in Hong Kong

The Canadian Rockies in HDR

I was experimenting with a post-processing technique recently, and decided to share the results. HDR stands for 'high dynamic range', which is usually achieved by taking a series of photos of the same thing using different exposure settings, and then putting them together to create a higher tonal range than the camera is normally able to capture. These ones were done using a single shot. This is not a technique that I normally use, although I will be including it in a workshop that I will be doing in the near future. These photos were taken during a trip to Kananaskis in the summer of '09. For some fantastic examples of HDR images, check out Trey Ratcliff's work at www.stuckincustoms.com.

Clean Air Network

These photos were exhibited at a function put on by the Clean Air Network to help raise awareness of air pollution in Hong Kong.

This small set of atmospheric photos features elevated views of various locations in Hong Kong. The aim was to give the pieces have a specimen-like, motionless quality, with a surreal element in their creative approach. I wanted to show the air as a mirror to the expanse of city that lives below it, showing both city and sky converging to murky point before the horizon.

Mike and Holly

I recently photographed Mike and Holly somewhere in the great depths of Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island. Even among the people and the traffic we managed to find a beautiful, secluded area for the shoot, and had a great time.

The McKeen Family

This summer I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful family from southern Alberta with four wonderful children. It was a gorgeous day spent, climbing trees, running through farmers fields, and having fun.

Adam and Valerie

A few months ago, before moving to Hong Kong and still living in Saigon, I took some promotional shots for some good friends of mine, Adam and Valerie. Originally from Montreal, Adam and Val now live in Vietnam. They have been performing music regularly for two years at various venues in Saigon, and a little bit in Canada before that. Playing music is both their passion and hobby. At this time they are working on recording an album which will be finished within this year.

As the main songwriter, Adam is inspired by the moment, which will often lead into a song or just an idea. The music is stumbled upon and seems to come out of nowhere, and it is that music and rhythm that forms and influences the lyrics.

Their music is often about experience and consciousness, seemingly simple things... but rich with ideas and messages being conveyed.
